I wanted to get this post quickly up so I can stay somewhat on top of tracking what I have been doing for each episode. Thank you to those of you who have reached out to let me know you are also exploring this series with your students! I am excited to see what collaboration comes about for future resources.
For a discription of Diec18cho and how I came about it, check out this post.
To quickly recap: For Episode 1, part 1, I had front loaded some vocabulary and discussed characters before watching Episode 1 with my students. We stopped (because the bell rang) at minute 16, though I had hoped to get to 17:23. Next time, I need to talk one minute less, haha.
So, the following Friday, we started part 2 of Episode 1. This is a great second half, and there is one scene that I really wanted to focus on with students. Célia begins to understand what compassion can really mean and what teamwork can feel like, despite diferences.
We first started class with a simple re-call activity. Students worked in pairs to write 3-4 sentences in Spanish a response on white boards to: Summarize what you remember about Ep. 1, part 1. It was a great way to see what parts of the story stuck with them. I think I also put up my slide filled with the screenshots of the characters to scaffold their response.
Once we began part 2 at minute 16, I used this resource for the kitchen scene that starts as minute 18:20 and continues until minute 23:45. The activity is simple: just a sequencing assignment they did in partners, but I found this scene to be really important for their understanding of how Célia’s point of view starts to shift. She’s growing! It also explains what happens in the few minutes after with the exchange with Bilal (no spoilers here). The resource was written for my Spanish 4s, with nothing being too complicated because I wanted them to understand it pretty well (and quickly) on their own.
We then finished the episode, with me stopping rarely during the rest of the episode to make sure they could watch and understand for themselves.
Are you watching Diec18cho with your students? Let me know!
