What is CI?

What is Comprehensible Input?

What is CI?

If you are new to it, I am so glad you are reading this and will give you LOTS of resources from more qualified people to read about Comprehensible Input. Check out some info below:

If you are a language teacher

  • Look at this run down for teachers new to CI from Ignite Language. I found this when I was new-ish to CI and it encouraged me immensely.
  • Have you seen or read the Comprehensible Classroom blog? If you haven’t, you need to do so! Filled with activities (some free, some to purchase), steps for TPRS (a sub component of CI), etc.
  • Mike Peto has a very helpful CI Masterclass library (subscription) as well as some blog posts (public). Thanks to reading his newsletters and using other resources, I figured out Write and Discuss, Picture Talk and just general great CI basics!
  • Consider attending a conference. If you are in the Midwest, I enjoyed Comprehensible Midwest in Wisconsin, but I also know a lot of online or in person conferences exist. I post a list sometime soon.

If you are a language student…

  • Comprehensible input, to you, should be considered your best and most valuable way to acquire a language. In simple terms, its focus is to help you understand all input (what you hear and read), while slowly supporting your proficiency to include outputs (writing and speaking). If I were you, I wouldn’t waste time or energy on non-CI materials, unless you are able to move to a country/community where the language is spoken daily.
  • There are LOTS of online resources that support CI strategies if you are dedicated self-learner. There is nothing like in person learning, but these resources can help you out for now:
    • Youtube: Dreaming Spanish, Spanish Playground *I would suggest the stories playlists vs the others*
    • Podcasts:
      • Beginners: ¡Cuéntame!, Garbanzo Podcast
      • Intermediate: ¡Cuéntame!, Duolingo Podcast, Charlas Hispanas
  • If you need CI classes (for Spanish), please reach out. If I can’t teach you, I might be able to find you someone who will.

That’s a Wrap: Diec18cho Episodes 5 & 6, Plus Reflection!

By the time my students and I were about to start episode 5, there was a lot of anticipation for what was going to happen between Célia and Moha. Both episodes 5 and 6 deliver a lot of drama, and boy, were my students here for it! Below is a run down of what I…

Diec18cho: Ideas for Episodes 2, 3 & 4!

Wow, am I behind! Life took over, per usual, and my goals of providing materials went out the window with my sanity. Not really, but it did get busy there for quite a while! Sorry for the delay if you’ve been following to see how I utilized this series. Here’s the good news: I finished…

Aquí en Chicago: Exploring Latine Heritage in Chicago

I love field trips. To me, there is nothing more gratifying as a teacher than seeing your content area come alive and interact with students outside of the classroom. The fact that my school (I’m new this year) embraces field trips as an important part of learning is so encouraging. Not all schools share this…
